Why Self-Guided Meditation?
Guided meditation can be very helpful for relaxation purposes or for guiding your thoughts in a particular direction. But with guided meditation, there is always a conversation with someone outside of yourself who is talking to you. In self-guided meditation, you are alone with yourself. The purpose is to let go of conversations with others and with yourself, and let your attention gain a singular focus. Often this focus can be as aspect of your breath, or a resonating sound, or light, but it is typically directed toward an inward source or experience. When meditating on any of these foci, we don’t “think” about the focus, we merely allow our attention to be drawn to that focus. When we realize that we have started to “think” about something, we learn to let go of those thoughts and allow our attention to simply return to our focus. We don’t have to concentrate, we merely allow our attention to rest on our focus. Thus, self-guided meditation is also very relaxing. By turning our focus inward, to our breath, or a sound we are hearing, or light we are seeing, a communion with our inner nature develops that provides a lasting sense of peace. We learn to release the chatter of our ego and find the stillness inside.

Learn Self-Guided Meditation
This 6-hour workshop is designed to introduce self-guided meditation to students who either don’t know how to meditate or don’t know if they are doing it right. Self-guided meditation can be practiced anytime, anywhere. The course introduces three areas of focus during self-guided meditation – breath (as in mindfulness meditation), sound (as in mantras), and light. There will be practice sessions of each focus type as it is introduced. At the end of the course there will be four meditation practice periods of increasing length so that students will gain confidence in their ability to meditate using any of the focus types that they choose. The course consists of two, three hour sessions, and can be either held on a single weekend day, or two evenings.
